Organization History

The Department of Physical Education was established on December 9, 1933. At that time it was under the authority of the Ministry of Public Instruction. It was responsible for managing the entire country ’ s physical education program. The government during this period had
On August 27th 2010 by a Royal Decree, the name was changed from the Office of Sports and Recreation Development back to the Department of Physical Education. This name over time had gained the trust and confidence from local and foreign people.
Now the Department has modernized to reflect an emphasis on effective policies that will enable the department to promote and develop the various aspects of physical education, health, sports, recreation, sport science and personnel development of involved fields.

The Department of Physical Education is mandated to implement operations regarding physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related personnel development, with the following powers and duties:

  1. To implement operations regarding basic sports and mass sports.

  2. To implement operations regarding recreation.

  3. To implement operations regarding sports science.

  4. To develop personnel in the fields of physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related sectors.

  5. To survey, record, collect, and develop information technology systems for planning, management, statistical dissemination, and the body of knowledge in physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related personnel development.

  6. To preserve, promote, and disseminate Thai sports, traditional plays, and indigenous sports.

  7. To coordinate cooperation with public and private organizations, both domestically and internationally, to establish networks for operations in physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related personnel development.

  8. To formulate action plans as well as quality and standard development plans for physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related personnel development, in alignment with national policies, the National Sports Development Plan, and the National Recreation Development Plan.

  9. To study, survey, analyze, research, consult, advise, and develop academic works regarding physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related personnel development.

  10. To monitor and evaluate performance and outcomes in physical education, health, sports, recreation, sports science, and related personnel development.

  11. To perform any other actions as prescribed by law to be the powers and duties of the Department, or as assigned by the Minister or the Cabinet.
